Life is officially in full swing this week! On top of my regular job, Culinary School is fully underway and today our first article is due for my Food Writing Class. Throw in a few other things like Monday’s recreational cooking class and this morning’s impromtu breakfast with my Uncle in town from England and I am one busy bee! I am so happy to be busy doing what I love, don’t get me wrong, but I am stressing a bit about fitting it all in.
One thing that I’ve been missing are my regular work-outs. I usually make a point to exercise at least 4 days a week – the past 2 weeks I’ve only made it 4 times total. I guess I need to just accept I can’t do it all. If I miss out on the gym a bit while all of this is going on, the few months I’m doing this aren’t much in the long run. Last night I had about 20 minutes of free time between working on my article and our class chat and I managed to get a bit of strength training in. Something is always better than nothing, right? I hope that as the weeks progress I become more skilled at getting everything accomplished. But if not, I can only do my best!
Phew. Sorry. I will get a grip soon
.
So! For my first Food Writing assignment, we need to cover a food news or food trend topic. I chose to cover Pinkberry knock-offs coming to DC as I noticed in the Washingtonian that they have been listed as one of the top foodie trends of 2010. I’d like to focus my writing on topics that are of interest to DCites in my age demographic, because that is the audience I’d most like to write for once my classes are complete.
However, I realized that writing an article on Pinkberry knock-offs in DC is hardly going to work if I have never actually been to one! It had to be fixed.

A small chocolate fro yo with strawberries and granola. It was good but really? I prefer ice cream
. If you are going to spend the money/calories on dessert once in a while I say eat what you really love. However apparently I am in the minortiy because this place was hopping! Particularly with 20-30 y/o females. Women sure love their frozen yogurt – even in the winter.
How about everyone else – Any fro yo fans out there? What is it that makes it so appealing to you? Enlighten me!
In conclusion, please allow me to share the gorgeous scene outside of my apartment this morning. Because even on the busiest weeks, we must take time to stop and enjoy the scenery
.

Wow, the scene outside your apartment looks beautiful! I am jealous you see that everyday!
As for fro-yo…I am a HUGE fan but I think it comes from the fact that as a child my parents only let us have fro-yo so now as an adult I think ice cream tastes too sweet.
while nothing comes close to ice cream, that fro yo sure does look delicious
wow that is such a pretty picture!!
Fro Yo pretty much always satisfies me just as much as ice cream if not more—not sure why? It might be the creamy texture or the selection of toppings. (Hello, Heath bar!) There’s a place in NYC called 16 Handles, and it is SO good, although a little dangerous. You fill your own cup and add the toppings. The toppings bar is RI.DIC. (choc covered pretzels, cookie dough, etc). Umm yeah, I probably eat more calories when I go there than I would with a regular ice cream cone!

that’s what i need to find!! i have yet to see a self serve fro yo place in DC…i think i could go wild there
.
I’ve never had Pinkberry, as we don’t have any around here…but I have heard people rave about them. I like yogurt, ice cream, all of the above!
I was just telling my husband how I wish we had frozen yogurt places around here – we don’t have any!!
Yes that is beautiful.
I am not much of ice cream frozen yogurt person.. I eat it from time to time.. but I don’t crave it or want it like some people do..
I was truly enjoying my drive to work in Georgetown! It was soooo pretty!
I didn’t know you worked in Georgetown! We live/work within like a mile of eachother then!! Crazy blog world coincidence
That snow is CRAZY! And 20 more inches this weekend? Yikes.. Hope you’re having a great night!

I can’t eat regular ice cream OR frozen yogurt (though if a soft-serve soy shop ever opens, count me in!) but I think the reason it’s popular with the 20-30s has less to do with taste than with psychology. Most of them would probably love to eat at an ice cream shop just as much, except ice cream has a “bad” aura about it. When you think about ice cream, you think gobs of sugar and fat. But the label “frozen yogurt” has a health-like glow to it, so they feel like they’re “allowed” to indulge there.
The concept is certainly skewed, because frozen yogurt is hardly the nutritious godsend companies hawk, but it’s the same with other “fat free” or “organic” foods. It’s not socially sanctioned for women to eat Oreos happily in public. But you look “good” if you’re chowing down on Snack Wells or substitutes the consistency of cardboard. There’s a morally superior boost to suffering for the sake of your figure.
Thank you for your feedback! I totally agree that image has everything to do with the popularity of fro yo. Esp. because celebrities are toting around Pinkberry cups everywhere they go. And I know what you mean about the “diet” foods too. That’s why I say I would so much rather eat a small cup of real ice cream than a giant tart fro yo…no where near as real or as satisfying!
GORGEOUS winter pic!!! And I don’t have fro yo much but I enjoy it about equally with ice cream.
MMMMmmmm…….
I must say I am a frozen yogurt lover!!! Def prefer it to ice cream
Oh, and that took me a while to figure out what Pinkberry was… I thought it was some kind of fruit for a second that people were imitating, lol.
aww, hello my sweet! i love seeing you on the blog. can’t wait to skype this weekend – DC is getting SO MUCH SNOW – I hope you’re ready to talk to you snowbound friend for hours!!
What a beautiful scene!
What does it for me is the tart yogurt. I am not a huge fan of regular fro yo, but the tart makes it less sickeningly sweet. I am still aware that it’s not health food, but it tastes awesome!
the fro-yo craze has gotten outa hand on the main street near me – THREE PLACES!!!! i love it, though.
gorgeous view indeed!
fro-yo looks yummy~~~ I want one!
Ice cream all the way. Although the “ice milk” from Dairy Queen will work as well (I worked there for 4 years so of course I love it)
I feel you on trying to fit in workouts. I work at a gym and sometimes I still struggle!! I’m learning to accept that my booty kicking workouts in my basement are just as a good as a trip to the gym and take less time and have less distractions. I am just looking forward to some nice weather so some outdoor workouts can occur…NO MORE SNOW!

Job + culinary school?! You’re one busy gal! I’ve never had real Pinkberry but a knockoff just opened up nearby!
I totally agree with you about the fro-yo! I’d rather have real ice cream and satisfy my craving completely.
And, I like your thoughts on missing work-outs and “fitting it all in”. I was just starting to feel guilty about missing the gym today (and this weekend) so I’m glad I read your post!
had so much fun cooking last night as always!! can’t wait to see your post today
It’s okay, eating it while it’s snowing means it won’t melt as fast!
I love your blog! It’s so well written. Would you mind very much if I added you to my blogroll?
no, absolutely, please do! i’ll be happy to add you to mine also
I’m yet to try a Pinkberry- although I really want to. It seems when I get a craving, the Baskin Robbins down the street is all too convenient.
But I’m one of those crazies that actually likes the frozen yogurt better- something in the texture that I prefer…
Oh my…gosh! That is a BEAUTIFUL picture!!! It’s almost too elegant and posed to be true!
And wow, you do sound very very busy…hold your head up! You’ll get through it! And don’t worry about a few missed work-outs…I’d think your body deserves a rest during such hectic times!
I have been to a Pinkberry before and they only had three flavors of yogurt. It was like plain, green tea and ….chocolate? This might be helpful for your article!
thanks nic! i’ll take all the info i can get
