First things first, FitBloggin ’10. I’m super excited – it’ll be my first bloggy conference! What I was wondering is if there’s anyone from the DC area who is going Saturday only? That’s my plan and as I’m carless in the city I could use a ride. Please email me if that’s you (DiningAndDishing at gmail dot com). I’ll love you forever!
For my Food Writing course this week, we’ve been assigned to write a food memoir. My chef instructor at culinary school is quite interested in what we’re doing because he does some food writing himself. I was telling him about our assignment and he said he’d like to see a 100 word memoir on cooking something. He said if I’d write it up, he’d also be happy to provide feedback. 100 words my friends, is not very much at all! But I like a challenge
.
As I only have a few sentences to work with, I needed my idea to be somewhat simple but also something I could write passionately about. Sooo – I picked oatmeal!! A while back I read the most goooorgeous paragraph on making a bowl of oatmeal in the morning that kind of made me fall in love with the author. Writing one of my very own for this project seemed like a nice idea.
So of course, this morning I needed inspiration.

Oats with almond butter and maple syrup. Lovely. My complaint however, is that the last time I bought maple syrup I tried to save money by purchasing some cheap stuff from Trader Joe’s. I can taste the difference
- tastes more like honey than maple. I’ve decided quality syrup is well worth every penny!
See you soon.
- Beth

A food writing course sounds awesome. I would love to take one of those.
its an online mediabistro.com course. if you’re interested i’d be happy to pass along the info!
My brother is one of the speakers at FitBloggin! His name is Charlie http://www.backtothefridge.com. He became friends with Roni over a year and a half ago – I wish I could go because so many of my blog friends are going to be there – including you!
But I have my daughter’s exchange student coming that same weekend – next time though!
just visited your brother’s site…his oatmeal post is HILARIOUS!! can’t wait to see him speak
Wow…100 words is not a lot at all!! I am sure you will rock it fabulous Beth!
Good luck on your piece! I have a 10 page paper to do…wanna trade?
Glad you got the chia seeds! Enjoy!
haha, no way!!
oh my gahhhhhh that syrup looks soo good in those oats!
I could talk about oatmeal all day. It’s funny how something so seemingly boring can evoke so much passion!
Stick with good maple sirop. Crap is crap.
P.S. I nominated you for the fun Creative Blogger Award. Check my newest post.
thank YOU!!
Ooo Beth I am really excited about your choice to write about oatmeal. I would love to read it. An ode to the beloved grain. It really is one of the most perfect foods. Your bowl looks just plain delicious!! I have honestly never put maple syrup on it- weird.
And I think you’re right about a good syrup being worth the price!
That’s so funny! I have had oatmeal on the mind this week, too

I love maple syrup, and quality definitely is important..otherwise it tastes sort of like bad pancake syrup to me, like from a school lunch? lol
