*Happy Friday!*
Last night I met with my old roomies Beth D. and Nicole for dinner at Jose Andres’ Oyamel. Beth is quite the creature of habit when it comes to eating - she has certain foods that she just LOVES and tends to stick to them. This restaurant features most of her beloved dishes so it’s pretty much like the meal was MADE for her! The rest of us didn’t mind it too much either
.
We arrived a bit early for our reservation and thought we’d have to wait a while, but as luck would have it they’d just opened up outdoor seating and had a table available. It was a gorgeous evening and was much quieter outside than in, so it was perfect for conversation!
We started with an order of house-made guac for the table, which our sever mixed up in front of our eyes.

With green tomatillo, serrano chile, crumbled queso fresco cheese and a basket of fresh tortillas chips
Delish! You could really taste the citrus in there, which added a lovely fresh touch.
The restaurant is tapas style (2-4 small plates per person). For my meal, I had the scallop ceviche and Mexican truffle quesadilla.

Bay scallops with key lime, powdered ancho chile, blood orange and Siembra Azul blanco tequila
Hello beautiful! Unfortunately the ceviches took a long time to come out and I was pretty much ready to eat my arm by the time this arrived. So although it was exceptionally beautiful and completely yummy, I was a bit sad that the only edible part of the dish were those three little scallops on top! On the upside, our server spritzed them in a “tequila shower” before placing them in front of me. Have you ever heard of anything quite so fun?!
And this wasn’t far behind.

Traditional folded corn tortilla with Chihuahua cheese and black Mexican truffle
Although this was a fairly simple dish compared to many of the menu’s offerings, I just couldn’t help myself! Anything with truffles gets my automatic, undying love. And I’d never had a Mexican one before. Of course, it was fabulous.
And now for dessert.

Okay so this isn’t actually what I had. I had a tres dulche cake and while it was good, it does not deserve to be featured the way the above does. I WISH I had the full description but sadly it’s not available online. It was, a scoop of Mexican coffee ice cream with milk chocolate sauce, caramelized banana and cinnamon shortbread. HOLY AMAZING. Beth D. was the proud owner of this dessert and I was just toooo jealous
.
So there you go! Oyamel was a dream. And of course spending time with my old roommates was the nicest treat of the evening! Speaking of old roomies, my bestest friend Emily comes to town tomorrow morning for three days of fun. We met in high school but lived together in Charleston for a summer, so I think that qualifies
. I am SO EXCITED (as always) to hang with that lovely lady.
See you soon!
- Beth

Looks like a great place!
I love fresh made guac table side! And now I’m craving it!!!
Made-right-in-front-of-you-guacamole is the best!! I absolutely love the idea of a “tequila shower,” and the scallops look fabulous, though there aren’t many of them
You had me at the title! Tequila???? Yes, please.
Sounds like a good time – I love spending time with my girlfriends.
Those scallops are adorable! Although I’m sure I’d be like “uh, where is the rest?” haha.
Delicious foods! especially those scallops.. mm…
Guac made right in front of you is always the best kind of guac! My first time having guac made like that was at Dos Caminos in NYC… awesome.
LOL @ tequila shower.
I’m not sure what Chihuahua cheese is, but it sounds like fun.
Oh my that Guac looks amazing.
i love when they make guac at the table!
I need to make a list of all the wonderful DC places you visited so that I can visit myself when I’m in the area.
That folded corn tortilla with Chihuahua cheese and black Mexican truffle sure caught my eye! Easily the best dish there!!
Wishing I could’ve joined you 3!! xoxo from NYC!
We wish you could have been there too!! Hope all is well in NYC
